Are we ready to see if we have our Hiking Essentials in our day pack.  By now you have watched “You Tube’ videos on “How to Hike” and “How to use Hiking Sticks”.  Don’t laugh the videos really work.  The fun part is to gather some 10 Hiking Essentials for your Day Pack.   Some of you are thinking “do I really need a pack” and others are saying “oops I forgot my water”.   What you have in your hiking pack can be the difference between a good or bad hike.   I want to share a few tips on Hiking Essentials that I found helpful from my fellow hiking buddies here on Geoje, South Korea.

10 Hiking Essentials for my Day Pack

Most of you will do the local hikes on Geoje that last from 2 or more hours.  Always prepare yourself for longer unless you know the way.  Nine out of ten times you won’t understand that Korean directional sign you just passed or can’t believe the kilometers listed on the sign.  Not sure how they measure their kilometers but they are way off.  The essentials in your hiking pack will change depending on the type of hiking your do, the weather, or if it’s just for a few hours or all day.

There are so many more things you can add to your pack but remember to pack light.  We all know about these items but are guilty of not packing some of them until the time comes and we really need it.  Like my fellow friend new to hiking that joined us on a 4 hour hike up the mountain without the right clothes or shoes, and only a marshmallow moon pie, chocolate, and one 8oz bottle of water.   Must admit the chocolate was a tasty dessert after we all shared our lunches.   So you don’t get caught without the right essentials so let’s take a look at my pack.

10 Hiking Essentials

Water

Water is a hiking essential for survival.  It is the heaviest item in your pack and weighs 2.2 pounds per liter.    Start by drinking 1 liter of water before you leave the house.  Then pack enough water to last you for your hike.  Good rule of thumb is at least 2 liters of water a day.  If you’re only going out for a few hours then make adjustments on how much water to take.  Don’t forget to continue to drink water once you are home.  You can also take along a Gatorade to replace your electrolytes that have been lost.  Soft drinks don’t count.  Yes that means you.

Food

High energy snacks are essential to keep up your energy level while hiking.  Nuts and dried fruit are a good suggestion.  Take a sandwich, your hike may take longer than thought.  Plan ahead and include some protein.  Yes, the 7D dried mango’s from the foreign mart are tasty.

Map

Since there are few maps of these mountain trails do some research.   A Geoje Island map and Tourist Resource book is helpful.   Always tell someone where you’re going and which possible trail you will be hiking.  Try one of the new GPS watches that can record your hiking trails for you and set your trail.  You will be able to go back and find the trail again later.  Also phone a friend.   Some of us will remember that tree you just passed and can guide you in the right direction.

Compass

A compass is always good to have.  Learn how to use it with a map.  The GPS you have might run out of batteries.  I have yet to buy one but that’s the one item needed in my pack.

Extra Clothes

Check the forecast and know what the weather will be like for the day.  Wear a hat, bring a jacket if it’s cold and rain gear if there is a chance of rain.  Layering is very helpful especially during winter.  Try a wool shirt, this wicks moisture and dries quickly.  Also a jacket to stop the wind is helpful.   Dri-fit socks are great for hiking in plus they keep your feet dry which means less irritation.  There are Dri-fit socks specifically for winter to keep your feet warm and summer for keeping your feet cool.  Don’t forget to spend the money on good hiking shoes.  All I can say is layer, layer, and layer your clothing.

First Aid Kit

Just a small Ziploc bag you can put together with some bandages and ointments.  Include some pain relief pills too.   Mole skin or some soft pads are helpful for the tender spots on your feet.  Unless you on the mountain with me your nurse hiking buddy then forego this item.

Suncreen and Sunglasses

The sun can be very bright and can damage your eyes and skin.  It’s important to cover your eyes with glasses and your skin with sunscreen to prevent burns.  This can speed up dehydration.  Plus sunglasses can cover up the face when one hikes with no make-up on.

Phone

In this day and age cell phones are everywhere.  On Geoje one can usually find a cell phone signal if needed in case of an emergency.  If using a smart phone, one can put it in airplane mode to save on battery power.  This keeps the phone for searching for an internet signal which can run your cell phone battery down.   Always tell someone where you’re hiking and with who.  Don’t hesitate to call a fellow hiker if you get lost because he/she can help lead you in the right direction.

Hiking Sticks

Not a must but a suggestion if the terrain is steep.  They are helpful for going up and down hill.  Some of these trails are steep and can be dangerous if the weather turns bad and it rains.  The trails get muddy and very slippery here on Geoje.  In the winter I have seen lots of ice on the peaks and the sticks help with traction.   Learn the difference on how to set the stick lengths for going up or going down the trail.  Don’t forget to learn how to hike using them.  Yes this is the time to watch a U-Tube video.

Identification

Take some identification with you along with an emergency contact name and number on a paper.  Just in case of an emergency.   Yes a fellow hiker name should be included and don’t forget to write down the number too just in case your cell phone battery is dead.

Etcetera

Remember this is by no means is a complete list, just a guide.  For some of my other hiking buddies don’t forget your bottle of wine.   The 10 Hiking Essentials in your Day Pack depend on the duration, location, and difficulty of your hike.  Think smart and remember what you bring into the forest please take it out.   Don’t hike alone just call up a fellow hiker to join you.  Hiking Mt.
