My boating adventure starts along stunning Florida Keys, where we stumbled upon Cabbage Key from a recommendation. I asked myself why is Cabbage Key so special. Decided to go out and find this Florida Key along with the history that goes with it. So, we jumped into the boat in Cape Coral Florida to find the interesting Cabbage Key.
The adventure begins with navigating unfamiliar waters as we go full speed, hair blowing and dogs hanging on deck in their life jackets. An hour and a half later we come upon Cabbage Key according to the channel markers. We are surprised, half expecting a white sanding beach with a crazy beach bar but what we found surprised us. A historic Inn and Restaurant, boat slips, cottages, with mangrove trees.
We decided to stop, docked our boat with the dock master directions. Walked up the stairs through the restaurant and in awe looked around the bar to see the dollar bills hanging from the ceiling or taped to the wall. Do not miss the plaque behind the bar of a famous singer/songwriter who made a stop here on the Island. We decided to stay for a meal but first, let us go back in time.
Back in Time – Cabbage Key
The winter estate on Cabbage Key was built in 1936 for Alan Rinehart & Gratia Houghton Rinehart for the price of $14,500. Alan’s mother Mrs. Mary Roberts Rinehart was a successful writer in the 1920’s whose influence can be seen to this day throughout the Island. Cabbage Key changed hands a few times to its latest owners Bob and JaAnn Beck who over the last 40 years have taken pride in preserving “Old Florida Charm”.
Celebrity History – Cabbage Key
“Cheeseburger in Paradise” phrase might remind you of a famous song? The story starts out that Jimmy Buffet visited Cabbage Key for its famous tasty Cheeseburgers and amazing views. The Cabbage Key Restaurant is where Jimmy Buffet wrote his famous song “Cheeseburger in Paradise”. Being a fellow “Parrot Head” (fan) I was so excited to eat in the same restaurant the song was written to try a cheeseburger.

Make sure to take a stop over to Cabbage Key to visit the Famous Dollar Bill Bar, Restaurant, Inn and Cottages. Stay over for Fishing, Boating, Kayaking, and Nature Trails. Along with those activities say a hello to Floyd the bird, Sneaky the Otter, Speedy the turtle, Mr. Quacker the duck and more.
If the restaurant is full do not worry the tasty food comes out fast. There is a set menu if I am not mistaken with no changes. The famous Cheeseburgers comes out only medium cooked but it is so awesome tasting. I am ready to go back and visit again and take a look around and stay overnight in one of their cottages.

Sitting in the Famous Dollar Bill Bar and looking at all the dollars from people all over the world. Also, eating the famous Cheeseburger while looking out to Paradise.
My Least Favorite Experience
Dogs are not allowed. I understand their position but it is sad they are not allowed outside anywhere on the property. It would have been nice to put them on the beach to cool off.
